Translation & Interpretation at the 2018 Winter Olympics

The Olympic games bring people together from across the world, including thousands of professional interpreters and translators. With over 91 countries competing in this worldwide event, there are many different languages spoken. Interpreters and translators help decrease communication barriers and making sure everyone is understood. The Olympic games have three official languages, English, French and the third language is dependent on where the games are taking place. With the 2018 Olympic Winter games taking place in Pyeongchang, Korea, the third official language for these games was Korean. Many of the interpreters and translators are volunteers. Two years before the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, the Olympic committee recruited volunteers to assist with translation and interpretation. These volunteers helped with the translation of announcements, speeches, ceremonies, as well as interpretation for the athletes and game operations.
